Of the Essence

To participate in the group read what you need is a copy of each of the four original books (to see which one we're reading when, check the schedule). Buy them from amazon (com or co.uk) following the appropriate link below - or pop along to your local library if you're broke (being broke is the only excuse for not owning the books if you call yourself a Pooh-fan - and it's a short-term excuse at that).
If, like me, you quite like books that feel like they've been read before, or if, unlike me, you feel you might be able to spend the money to get a first edition, then ABEBooks.com is the place to go.

The essential 4 are as follows:

When We Were Very Young
Milne's first volume of verse for children, first published in 1924. Pooh makes his first appearance in print, though watch carefully - blink, and you'll miss it.

Winnie-the-Pooh
The first actual "Pooh-book" (1926). In which we are introduced properly to the Bear of Very Little Brain and the other inhabitants of the Forest.

Now We Are Six
The second book of verses (1927). Poohmania is sweeping the nation and although Pooh himself only appears in a couple of poems he is in A LOT of the illustrations (in order to meet public demand, we must suppose).

The House at Pooh Corner
The "conclusion" (1928) in which we learn a lot more about the inhabitants of the Forest, but in which we also have to say goodbye for good.

For other books by Milne, check the bibliography.

The House at Pooh Corner

Paperback edition of When We Were Very Young, ideal for reading up a tree, and with the original black and white illustrations, too. With a paperback you can also write comments in the margin without feeling too bad about it - which is useful for a group read.

Buy it from Amazon.co.uk (£3.99)

Paperback edition of Winnie-the-Pooh, ideal for reading while eating honey and milk (cheap enough not to worry about the sticky stains), and with the original black and white illustrations, too. With a paperback you can also write comments in the margin without feeling too bad about it - which is useful for a group read.

Buy it from Amazon.co.uk (£3.99)

Now We Are Six

Paperback edition of Now We Are Six, nice for slipping in your pocket to read on the bus, and with the original black and white illustrations, too. With a paperback you can also write comments in the margin without feeling too bad about it - which is useful for a group read.

Buy it from Amazon.co.uk (£3.99)

I found a paperback at Amazon.com also ($4.99), it's got a different cover, though.

Paperback edition of The House at Pooh Corner, nice for reading in the bath, and with the original black and white illustrations, too. With a paperback you can also write comments in the margin without feeling too bad about it - which is useful for a group read.

Buy it from Amazon.co.uk (£3.99)

Very nice facimile edition of The House at Pooh Corner. I've seen a first of this book and this edition is basically identical, except you get a slipcase instead of the original dust jacket.

Buy it from Amazon.co.uk (£12.75)

Also available (same price) is Winnie-the-Pooh and Now We Are Six

All the four books collected in one volume. Very nice, but a bit heavy for lugging around, or even for reading comfortably. Still, a lot of book for your money (how about this and the paperbacks?).

Buy it from Amazon.co.uk (£25.03)
or Amazon.com ($28.00)
